I found this 3 part BBC doc on Youtube - like "The Century of the Self", The Trap presents an account of the intellectual underpinnings of many of the misguided moves that Western governments are making in the world today. It goes into great detail about the reasoning behind our idealization of individual freedom and how our policies are producing a paradoxical result - the increase in tyranny and loss of liberty around the world. I've collected links to all of the parts here to make it a little easier to watch... I can't recommend this enough.
